Apple Tree Dree

Posted by on June 23, 2009

I’m slow to the table when it comes to talking about the new iPhone Operating System that got released on the 17th of this month, one thing that has stuck in my mind about the whole ordeal of updating the iPhone software is that Apple really let the ball down in delivery. At their World Wide Developers Conference they announced the June 17th Release date for the latest steroid injection to the iPhone range, when you think of June 17th Release date, especially in such a switched on world that we live in now, most tech savvy people will expect it at say 12:01 there was no time given for the release with many people speculating the times in which the update would go live, it was basically all just a hit and miss.

Although when the update did go live, Apple really wasn’t pre-paired for the rush that was about to hit their servers, when I woke up and realized the download was available, the file download itself took about 20 minutes which isn’t that bad on my internet speeds. But what got annoying was the fact that their authentication servers were down. For several hours, I might not know much about servers and the like, but surely Apple knew there would be hundreds of thousands of people wanting to sink their teeth into the newest apple on their tree but they weren’t ready for the amount of ladders coming their way to harvest the fruit? (Okay I will stop with the whole Tree Shit) They are a computer company surely they could have added a few extra servers to help validate all the upgrades they would be handing out. After a while though I was told this wasn’t the first time Apple had let the ball drop when it came to anticipating huge releases, apparently the release of the 2.0 software went down the exact same way for First Gen iPhone users.

How hard is it for a Multi-Million Dollar Computer company to switch on a few extra activation servers when they know they are going to be swamped by users?

I’m going to end that rant right there now and tell you all about some goodies that the 3.0 Software has inside of it. My favorite new addition is the Landscape Keyboard across all App’s It’s really the one main thing I was holding out for, I have no problem using the portrait size on-screen keyboard but when I’m driving and friends are in the car and I chuck my iPhone 3G to them to send a message or tweet something, it’s funny for the first few seconds to see them struggle to understand the touch screen key concept but then it just gets repetitive after few minutes of them trying to send three words to another person. Maybe the fact that they can put it sideways now and have the bigger keys it will make it a less tedious job?

MMS function… FINALLY, this is the only other thing that I really wanted from the iPhone besides Videoing options which I can’t get until the 3G S is released later this week. I never really used MMS on my old phones but the fact that the iPhone never had it when its such an easy thing to do is just kind of irritating, but it seems to be apples way of doing things with the iPhone, start off with the basics and make more and more people want your product year by year as you slowly catch up but try and make it look like your doing it way better than everyone else did who has done it before you.

Wow I really am sounding a bit anti-Apple today? It must be my cold because while I’m no Apple Fan-Boy I really am sick of Windows (I really hope Jason doesn’t read this, but even if he does he cant talk he OWNS a Macbook)

With that slight change of subject I am going to talk more about computers in this blog post… hmm what to say other than Windows Vista = The Suck?  I’ve used Vista since it came out basically and I never saw what everyones issue with it was besides it being a bit more RAM hungry. But recently Vista just isn’t holding on. It is crashing constantly, some days I’m lucky that it will stay switched on for 5 Minutes before locking up or giving me a good old BSOD but hey. I have my 15” Macbook Pro now and that’s all I really need.

Oh and while I’m at it, an update about Waterloged… my 13” Macbook that met a Orange Cordial Death a few months ago. Well it’s still running okay at the moment, although I never switch it off as it doesn’t always like turning back on in the morning… at least not until 5PM anyhow. So now it lives in sleep mode until I find something to do with it or some one to give it to.

I must say this feels to be the longest Blog I’ve written in a while now and I’m about to wrap it up but before I do I want to introduce a few of my new web-presences (does that make sense??) With Blog Every Day July coming up I have created a new youtube account which I will post more videos to (well hope to, I always say I will then fail miserably) it is www.youtube.com/iDigDan the i is there because /DigDan was taken L and i kind of fits in with my new Apple / Mac preference I also have a blogtv.com page to introduce. I’m not sure if I will do any live shows but its there incase I do and you can find that at www.blogtv.com/people/iDigDan same as the youtube reason /DigDan is taken L Theifs… You can also view my live stream (If I’m ever doing a live show) on my blog here, link at the top of my home page!
