Elitism

Posted by on May 24, 2009

In the U.S rumours are floating around that Wal-Mart will begin to sell Macs, iPhones and iPods, and just the hint of this possibility really shows how some people can be so self involved that it’s disgusting. One thing that really gets on my nerves is when some one believes they are better than some one else simply because they deem themselves to be.

These are just a selection of Comments posted by users over at Macrumours.com at the mere hint of Wal-Mart selling Apple Products.

“If they do this, Apple is cheapening the name of their company to be associated with Walmart. People who absolutely have to shop at Walmart can not really afford a mac computer. I see them getting stolen more than a HP or Dell computer, after all thieves do have good taste. Haha.

No really I can see the iPods because they basically just do music. Selling the iphones and the ipod touch was stretching it. The computers no way!”

It’s people like that who are just so self absorbed in their money and their socio-economic standing that they don’t want anyone in the lower income bracket to be anywhere near them even if it means giving them the opportunity look at something they class as rich-people-only.

I like Mac and Apple products, I hate the prices of it all because it is over-priced to high hell. But when people act as though they are better because they can afford it.. they need a swift kick up the ass. It’s a computer, not a badge of royalty.

Here is another comment. “Walmart really is disgusting. I hate where apple is going some times. I really do believe you can only have quantity or quality and not both”

This person is possibly worse than the first one I quoted and I stand by what I said, it’s a computer not a sign of your economic standing. It’s arrogant to think that simply because these people shop at walmart that they are immediately worse than you… Scum that doesn’t deserve to share your oxygen, sunlight or even your products.

People don’t shop at Walmart or the equivalent because they actively choose to. Many people are Low to Middle income workers and can’t afford to go to all the high price big brand places and god forbid that they may actually know the true value of a couple of bucks. Instead of those who flash around their Credit cards and only request the best.

I know that I am probably almost a classic case of “the pot calling the kettle black” but trust me I’m not some rich snob who thinks poor people are filthy. All the money I have, I’ve worked for because I’m lucky enough to have a job. With the economy being so crap around the world not everyone can even be that lucky. But I’ve worked full time for the past two, almost three years and haven’t had any big holidays or anything. As a kid to get money or toys or anything I had to do a whole bunch of jobs around the house. So I know that money doesn’t grow on tree’s and your abundance of cash or lack there of doesn’t make you a better or worse person.

Working in a supermarket, you see people come in who think they are better than you, simply because your there serving them for the 10 to 15 minutes that they are in the store. But most of the time you would like to tell them to get fucked or grow a personality, but you cant because you need the money your job provides you.

I’ve probably ranted on and am now making no sense so I’m going to leave you all with some more Elitist quotes from macrumors.com

I associate Wal-Mart with cheap crap. (my honest view of Wal-Mart). Everytime I walk in, everyone is rude (customers and workers) and no one in any department knows what they are talking about, much less would be able to explain what a Mac is and the benefits for that customer.

Not to mention, the main customer base of Wal-Mart is of the lower class, meaning they really don’t have the extra income to spend on a Mac, regardless of the benefits. Do all income-classes (low, middle, high) shop at Wal-Mart? Sure, but their PRIMARY base is of the lower income class. (and no, I’m not trying to be racist or demeaning), that’s just the way it is.

So no, I don’t think Apple should waste their time with Wal-Mart. “Maybe” Target…..but I think their best move was to open up in Best Buy’s.

“It not being elitist when the core shoppers bring their children in with no socks yelling and acting more ridiculous each passing moment. Further more Wal Mart destroys the community and YES these a certain demography shops here so by all means let bring the BWM cars too.

P.S. My Macbook is in a Coma atm. I spilt a drink all over it… She is on her side, battery free resting for a few days.

Yet another nice blog. Very thought provoking. At the moment I use my poor-uni-student status as an excuse for shopping wherever, which proves you’re entirely right in saying that in our society where you shop is who you are. I kind of agree with some of the comments (guilty wince, but since I’m a poor person, does that count?) Things like the lower socio-economic groups being less than savoury in their behaviour sometimes… and I reckon it works the other way – it’s not just the snobs that act rude to the employees of a store.
BTW, I am insanely jealous of all your gadgets, but you’re definitely not snobby about them. you rock :-D
